Kızkalesi Guide: The Maiden's Castle in the Sea and Its Legend
Kızkalesi (the Maiden's Castle), in the Erdemli district of Mersin, is one of the best-known landmarks on the Mediterranean coast, with its castle built on a small islet in the sea a short distance from the shore. Combining history with time by the sea, this trip could be one of the best days of your holiday in Mersin.
The legend of Kızkalesi
According to legend, when a king heard a prophecy that his daughter would die from a snakebite, he had a castle built in the middle of the sea to protect her. But one day a snake hidden in a basket of grapes sent to the castle fulfilled the prophecy. The castle takes its name from this story.
Korykos Castle and the ancient city
Directly opposite Kızkalesi, on the shore, stands Korykos Castle. The remains of the ancient city of Korykos can be seen around it. In the Middle Ages, the two castles were complementary parts of the coastal defences.
Beach and sea
Kızkalesi's beach is especially popular with families with children thanks to its shallow, clear sea. In summer you can cross to the castle by boat, and strong swimmers can also swim the short distance.
