Silifke History Route: Uzuncaburç, Castle and Göksu Delta
Around 30 minutes from Ulu Resort Hotel, Silifke, with a history stretching back thousands of years, is home to one of Mersin's richest history routes. In this guide we have gathered together the places you can see in and around Silifke in a single day.
Uzuncaburç (Diokaisareia)
North of Silifke, in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, the ancient city of Uzuncaburç is home to the Temple of Zeus Olbios with its surviving columns. You can also see the Temple of Tyche, the theatre and the tall tower that gives the city its name. In summer, the cool mountain air makes the visit all the more enjoyable.
Silifke Castle and Taşköprü
Silifke Castle, on the hill overlooking the town, offers sweeping views of the Göksu valley and the Mediterranean. In the town centre, the historic Taşköprü (Stone Bridge) over the Göksu River is one of Silifke's emblems.
Aya Tekla
Aya Tekla, just south of Silifke, was one of the important pilgrimage centres of the early Christian period. Its underground church, carved into the rock, is open to visitors.
Göksu Delta
Stretching between Silifke and Taşucu, the Göksu Delta is one of Turkey's important wetlands and birdwatching spots. It is ideal for a peaceful nature walk and photography.
