Uzuncaburç travel guide: an ancient city in the Taurus Mountains
Uzuncaburç is the ancient city of Diocaesarea, set on the slopes of the Taurus Mountains north of Silifke. About a 1.5-hour drive from our hotel, it adds cool mountain air and history to your beach holiday.
Temple of Zeus Olbios
The city's emblem is the Hellenistic Temple of Zeus Olbios. Its standing columns belong to one of the earliest Corinthian-order temples in Anatolia.
More to see in the city
- The columns of the Temple of Tyche
- The Roman theatre
- The colonnaded street and monumental city gate
- The multi-storey Hellenistic tower that gives the city its name
- The nearby ruins of Olba (Ura)
Combine it with Silifke
Combine your visit to Uzuncaburç with Silifke Castle, the Silifke Museum and the banks of the Göksu River for a full day out. On the way back, a seaside stop in Taşucu is another lovely option.
Practical information
Uzuncaburç lies higher than the coast, so it is cooler even in summer. We recommend comfortable shoes, water and a hat. Check the latest opening hours and entry conditions before you set off.
