Cennet and Cehennem Sinkholes: Mersin's Heaven and Hell
One of Turkey's most impressive natural formations, the Cennet and Cehennem (Heaven and Hell) Sinkholes are located in Narlıkuyu, in the Silifke district of Mersin. Formed by natural processes over thousands of years, these sinkholes are home to many stories, from mythology to legends.
Cennet Sinkhole
Named for its lush greenery and mystical atmosphere, the Cennet (Heaven) Sinkhole is a large depression formed by groundwater eroding the limestone. Steps lead down into the sinkhole, inside which stands the Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 5th century.
Cehennem Sinkhole
Deep and sheer-sided, the Cehennem (Hell) Sinkhole cannot be entered. Looking down from above gives a sense of endless darkness, and the sinkhole conveys to visitors the power of nature and the legends of the past.
Mythology and legends
According to ancient Greek mythology, Zeus imprisoned the giant Typhon in the Cehennem Sinkhole to banish him from the face of the earth. This story is one of the main things that make the area so mystical and intriguing.
